The History of Pilot
Pilot was founded in Tokyo in 1918 by Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada, initially under the name Namiki Manufacturing Company. The company began producing fountain pens and quickly gained a reputation for precision engineering and high-quality nibs.
The Namiki brand was established for the company's premium and decorative pens, while Pilot became the name for their broader range. Today, both names are used: Pilot for the mainstream range and Namiki for the luxury and Maki-e decorated pens.
Pilot has been responsible for several significant innovations in the pen world, including the development of the Vanishing Point (a retractable nib fountain pen) and the CON-70 high-capacity converter.
Japanese Nib Sizing
As with all Japanese pen brands, Pilot nibs run finer than their European equivalents. A Pilot Fine (F) writes closer to a European Extra Fine, and a Pilot Medium (M) is roughly equivalent to a European Fine. This is worth bearing in mind when choosing a nib width. Pilot Custom 74 and Custom 742
The Custom range represents Pilot's premium everyday writers. The Custom 74 features a 14-carat gold nib and is available in a range of nib widths including soft fine and soft medium, which offer a degree of flex.
