The History of Pelikan
Pelikan was founded in Hanover, Germany in 1838 by Carl Hornemann, initially as a manufacturer of writing inks and artist colours. The pelican logo, inspired by a family coat of arms, has been associated with the brand since the nineteenth century and remains one of the most recognisable symbols in the pen world.
Pelikan produced their first fountain pen in 1929, introducing the innovative piston filling mechanism that would become their signature. This design, which allows the pen to be filled directly from a bottle by twisting the barrel, remains the standard for Pelikan fountain pens to this day.
The iconic Souverän range was introduced in 1982 and has become one of the most celebrated fountain pen lines ever produced. Pelikan continues to manufacture their pens in Hanover, Germany, and the Pure Pens team has had the privilege of visiting the factory to see the craftsmanship first-hand. The Pelikan Piston Filling System
Pelikan's piston filling system is one of the great innovations in fountain pen history. By twisting the barrel, a piston draws ink directly from a bottle into the pen's barrel, giving a much larger ink capacity than a cartridge or converter. This system also means Pelikan fountain pens can only use bottled ink, making them the natural choice for ink enthusiasts. See our guide to filling a fountain pen for step-by-step instructions.
The Pelikan Range
The entry point to the Souverän-style Pelikan range. The M200 features a steel nib and a classic striped resin body, while the M205 is the demonstrator version with a clear barrel. Both offer the full Pelikan piston filling experience at an accessible price.
The M400 is the classic Pelikan Souverän in its most popular size. With a two-tone gold nib, striped resin body, and gold-plated trim, the M400 is one of the finest fountain pens available at its price point. The M405 is the steel-trimmed variant. Available in a range of classic colours including black, white tortoiseshell, and brown tortoiseshell. Read our full Pelikan Souverän guide for a detailed comparison of all models.
Larger versions of the Souverän, with bigger nibs and greater ink capacity. The M800 in Blue with Gold Trim in particular is considered by many to be the pinnacle of everyday fountain pen design, with an 18-carat gold nib that writes with exceptional smoothness and character. For a truly special limited release, the M600 Georg Tippel Art Collection is a collector's standout. See our Pelikan Souverän vs Parker Duofold comparison for more context.
The flagship of the Pelikan range. The M1000 is a large, imposing pen with an 18-carat gold nib and a substantial ink capacity -- the M1000 in Green Striated is the defining colourway and one of the finest fountain pens we stock. It is the pen of choice for writers who want the ultimate Pelikan experience. Pelikan also produce a series of M1000 limited editions that are highly sought after by collectors.
Pelikan Maki-e
Pelikan's collaboration with Japanese Maki-e lacquerware artists produces some of the most beautiful and valuable fountain pens in the world. Each pen is hand-decorated using the ancient Japanese art of Maki-e, making every piece unique. Read more about the Pelikan Maki-e range.
