At the end of 2022, Pelikan released a special anniversary fountain pen to honour 40 years of the Souverän -- one of the most celebrated pen ranges ever produced.
The History of the Souverän
The Souverän range was launched in 1982 with the M400, featuring the now-iconic green and black "Stresemann" striped barrel. The M400 played a pivotal role in Pelikan's history, widely credited with helping to turn around the company's fortunes during a period of serious financial difficulty in the early 1980s. Today, the Souverän ranges are one of Pelikan's defining product lines and among the most respected fountain pens in the world.
The Anniversary Pen
The 40 Year Anniversary pen is based on the size and shape of the M800, but features a gilded piston knob and mid-section that give it a distinctly more substantial feel. It measures 14.2cm -- the same as a standard M800 -- but weighs 36 grams, compared to the M800's 29 grams.
The pen features an 18-carat gold medium nib engraved with the Pelikan and chick in its nest, along with the words "40 Years". It comes presented in a sleek black cube-shaped gift box containing the pen and a bottle of 4001 Dark Green fountain pen ink with a special anniversary label.
Limited Edition
The pen is limited to 888 pieces worldwide. The number is significant: 8 is considered a lucky number in many cultures, and the figure-of-eight also represents the infinity symbol -- a reminder, as Pelikan put it, that they intend to remain a permanent name in the fine writing industry.
